Is it possible to guess the gender of a person, from the way a post is written? This was a question that was raised by The Girl, co-writing Spoken Like Two ENFPs with The Kid. Well it seems that it is possible to easily figure out man-write from women-write. :)
Quite some time ago, if you recall, Ammani had a feature called Letters For All. I was looking at some of the letters again, when I came across this letter. If you look at the comments, one of the commenters thought that the letter was written by a lady, while another thought that it had been written by a man. I re-read the letter and found that there were no references to gender in that entire letter, and the individual perceptions of the commenters, must've been influenced by their own preconceived notions, based their experiences. If you have nothing else to do, Try to guess the gender of the letter-writer. ;)

I once did a gender test for my writing...my poetry came out as 'female' while my analytical writing and humour pieces came out as 'male'. Since am equally comfortable with writing all of these, I wonder how exactly the test classified me as such. I guess it's the notion that only men can be funny and properly analytical while women are good at all the 'emotional' stuff [like poetry]. One of my friends at Sussex is doing her MA dissertation on gender in improv shows like 'Whose Line is it Anyway?'. It's quite an interesting subject...she's working on how such on-the-spot shows usually cast women in comic roles that require them to make use of their sexuality. Also, I went for a gender conference at Cambridge University where this prof called Deborah Cameroon from Oxford spoke on books like 'Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus' and explained how such pseudo-science re-affirms traditional gender orders. Was very illuminating!
Quite a long comment, that!
